I was honored to welcome Representative Marissa Flores of the Northern Marianas Commonwealth Legislature and House legal counsel Joe Taijeron to the U.S. Capitol last month while they were in Washington, D.C. for the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) Capital Forum. We had a meaningful conversation about the challenges facing the Commonwealth, from economic concerns to ways Congress and the federal government can provide support during this time. It was good to hear their perspectives and share ideas on how we can work together for the people of the CNMI.

I wrote to President Trump regarding the major investment agreements recently announced with Japan and the Republic of Korea this week, extending my appreciation for securing these unprecedented commitments and sharing how meaningful they could be for the Northern Mariana Islands. Our islands are the closest American community to both countries, and before the pandemic their visitors and investments formed the backbone of our tourism economy.
