We are wrapping up the first full week of the federal government shutdown that began on October 1, 2025, after Congress failed to reach an agreement on a funding measure. While your Congressional Office remains open and available to you in both the district offices in the Marianas and in Washington, the impacts on our ability to do this critical work are becoming apparent. During a lapse in funding, employees who are designated non-critical are prohibited from performing their duties.

Scientists have discovered a new species of deep-sea coral, Iridogorgia chewbacca, in the Mariana Trench and near Hawaii! Named for its resemblance to the tall, furry Star Wars character Chewbacca, this coral’s long, flexible branches make it a truly remarkable addition to our understanding of Pacific biodiversity.

I want to take a moment to give a special shout out to a man who has quietly served our community since we moved home. My husband, Chester, was recognized with the Bridge of Light Award by the Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence for his hard work, dedication, and commitment to our islands. I could not be prouder. Thank you to the OAG Criminal Division for being his home away from home, and to the NMCADSV for the work you do to make a difference in the lives of victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

This week, our office was delighted to welcome a bright and motivated group of students from Fairpoint High School near Rochester, New York.  My staff had a wonderful conversation with the students about U.S. aviation policy and my work on the House Aviation Subcommittee. Their thoughtful questions and keen interest in ensuring safe, reliable air travel were inspiring. I am especially encouraged to see young leaders from across the country engaging with issues that impact communities like the CNMI, helping keep our islands connected and accessible.
