I am proud to congratulate Sergeant Nathan Jacob F. Nogis of the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division on being awarded the Soldier’s Medal, recognizing his extraordinary heroism and selfless service. On October 26, 2024, Sgt. Nogis responded to a desperate call for help involving two individuals stranded in the waters of the Pearl Harbor Ship Channel. With Harbor Patrol unable to immediately respond, Sgt. Nogis relied on his survival training and quick thinking. He secured the only available vessel, a small, youth-sized boogie board, and set out into dangerous waters.
USDA RD Area Director Mr. Joseph Diego and Business Program Director for the Hawaii State Office, Shirley Heatherly, dropped by the Saipan DO during a visit to Saipan. They announced over $500K in programs being granted to CNMI businesses and meeting with other business organizations in the hopes of increasing program participation. Joe Ballard, Special Assistant to the President in the White House Office of Legislative Affairs, visited with me on Wednesday. Joe is our new primary point of contact at the White House, and we discussed key issues affecting the Marianas, including the ongoing recovery from Super Typhoons Sinlaku and Bavi and the federal response. Thank you, Joe, for visiting and for the White House’s continued support for the people of the Northern Mariana Islands.

A recent Vision Times article highlights what many of us in the CNMI know well: the enduring legacy of Japanese craftsmanship can still be seen throughout our islands. From century-old homes, shrines, and structures to the former Japanese Hospital in Garapan, now home to the Northern Mariana Islands Museum of History and Culture, these structures remain tangible reminders of the deep historical connection between the CNMI and Japan. Our relationship with Japan is rooted in far more than geography.
