Congresswoman King-Hinds Responds to Federal Pause on Financial Assistance Programs
(Office of Congresswoman King-Hinds) – Congresswoman Kimberlyn King-Hinds issued a statement today addressing concerns over the Trump Administration’s announcement of a temporary pause on federal financial assistance programs, as outlined in a memorandum from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The memorandum directs federal agencies to halt obligations and disbursements of federal grants, loans, and financial assistance while the Administration reviews programs to align them with its priorities.
“The pause on federal loans and grants announced today by the Trump Administration has certainly caused concern among the community,” said Congresswoman King-Hinds. “The CNMI is heavily reliant on federal assistance, and this reliance has only deepened as we await the recovery of our economy. While this pause is framed as temporary, it speaks to the challenges we face as a community that depends on consistent federal support for critical programs and services.”
Congresswoman King-Hinds acknowledged the Administration’s efforts to refine federal spending but emphasized the need for clarity and the potential impact on vital programs in the Northern Marianas. “President Trump has been actively establishing his vision for the country through numerous Executive Orders—more than two dozen since his inauguration. This is the prerogative of the President up to a point. Congress retains the ‘power of the purse,’ and checks and balances are in place to limit deviations from legislatively mandated funding priorities.”
The Congresswoman expects the administration to clarify the scope of the Executive Action in the coming days. “We do not know the specifics right now, but I am confident that many of the critical programs in the CNMI merit passing any review by the White House, as they are vital to the success of our Commonwealth and its people,” she stated.
To address potential delays or challenges, Congresswoman King-Hinds encouraged all grant-funded agencies and stakeholders in the CNMI to stay informed about updates related to the Executive Order. “We will do the same and are committed to working alongside you to address any potential delays and minimize disruptions to the services you provide to the community. Please do not hesitate to communicate with my office directly if you experience specific issues as a result of this action.”
The Congresswoman reaffirmed her dedication to advocating for the people of the CNMI, stating that “ensuring stability for our residents and safeguarding the programs they rely on during this transition will require active communication with the Trump Administration and that is what I will commit myself and the office to doing.”
