Working Together for CNMI’s Workforce: CNMI Department of Labor

I met with the Department of Labor this week to discuss workforce challenges and ongoing programs, including the successes of the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program and the possibility of continuing it. PUA was the first program of its kind in the CNMI. Unlike the 50 states, we do not have a standing Unemployment Insurance program, so our DOL had to build an entirely new system while delivering critical support to affected workers. This meant training staff in new skills and managing a large-scale program from the ground up. While many states can absorb remaining PUA work into their existing UI programs, our DOL still has work to finish, and funding is nearing expiration. Making the case to see this program through will be a challenge, but one I am committed to taking on. My thanks to the hardworking PUA staff who overcame tremendous hurdles and continue to do important work for our community.
