Working with Navy Leadership on the CNMI’s Economic and Infrastructure Needs
The economic challenges facing our Commonwealth have become increasingly urgent, and I have been working to make sure our federal partners understand what is at stake for our people and for the United States' long-term presence in the Pacific. On Tuesday, I met with Admiral Mietus to discuss the worsening economic conditions in the CNMI, including the impact of declining tourism, rising utility costs, and the recent suspension of EVS-TAP. We talked about the need for a coordinated federal response and the importance of recognizing that a strong local economy is essential to supporting our nation's defense interests in the Marianas. The following day, we continued those conversations with Admiral Mietus and Andy Weedon, Director of Policy and Strategy for the Secretary of the Navy, alongside Governor Apatang. Our discussions focused on infrastructure investments that could benefit both our communities and the military, including improvements to our power systems, airports, and harbors on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. We also discussed opportunities to move priority projects forward through federal infrastructure programs and the importance of keeping our agencies working together to turn these discussions into actual investments. I appreciate Admiral Mietus and Director Weedon taking the time to engage with us on these issues and see the challenges facing our islands firsthand. There is a great deal of work ahead, and I look forward to continuing these conversations as we pursue the federal support and investments our Commonwealth needs.
