Working to Address Mail Tariffs
I have heard from many residents and businesses in the Marianas who have recently been charged new tariffs on packages sent to the United States following the implementation of Executive Order 14324. Some of these charges have even been applied to goods clearly produced in the CNMI or items critical to public safety such as lab materials and medical supplies. This is not right and is inconsistent with both the Covenant and U.S. law. I have raised these concerns with the Department of Homeland Security and the White House, outlining the legal and practical problems with the current process, including the risk of double taxation, lack of a system to return customs revenue to the CNMI, and the improper treatment of U.S.-made goods as foreign. To strengthen our case, I need your help. My office is gathering information from residents and businesses who have been affected. If you have been charged a tariff on packages sent to the U.S. or Puerto Rico, especially if the contents were produced in the CNMI or the US, please contact us at king-hinds@mail.house.gov and share your experience. Your help with painting a full picture of the impact will be very helpful. We all know that reliable and affordable mail service is essential for our community, and I will keep pressing this issue until the Marianas are treated fairly under U.S. law.
