Update on the Social Security Fairness Act
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has begun issuing retroactive payments and will increase monthly benefits for those affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), following the enactment of the Social Security Fairness Act on January 5. These provisions previously reduced or eliminated benefits for over 3.2 million retirees, including some CNMI government retirees. Most eligible beneficiaries will receive a one-time retroactive payment by the end of March, and higher monthly benefits starting in April. I have been informed that the SSA is expediting payments, with automated processing expected to resolve most cases quickly, while complex cases will take additional time. Eligible beneficiaries can anticipate receiving mailed notices detailing changes but should wait until April before inquiring about payment status.
