Transportation Department Visit Brings Focus on CNMI Needs
I believe that to truly understand the challenges we face in the Marianas, you have to see our islands firsthand. Not only the issues, but also what we are fighting for: our people, cultures, and way of life. That’s why I’m grateful Deputy Assistant Secretary Jared Smith of the U.S. Department of Transportation visited the CNMI this week. In meetings hosted by Governor Apatang and local leaders, he heard directly from our government agencies about the hurdles we face, especially in maintaining critical air service. We also met with private sector leaders who shared ideas and concerns about sustaining a viable economy. It was a productive series of conversations, and the honest dialogue has given us a clearer path to work together toward recovery. My thanks to everyone who participated and to the Department of Transportation for their partnership in building a stronger CNMI.
