Talking through the Road Ahead for Federal Recovery Funding

I came onto social media last Friday because I felt it was important to walk our community through how federal disaster funding actually works and why long-term recovery dollars can take time to arrive. Right now, federal agencies already have access to certain emergency funds used for immediate response efforts like debris removal, emergency repairs, shelters, generators, and other urgent needs. But larger long-term rebuilding efforts often require Congress to pass a separate disaster supplemental appropriation. That process takes negotiation between the House and Senate and usually involves multiple disasters from across the country being included in the same package. I used Super Typhoon Yutu as an example because many people remember how long that process took. Recovery funding tied to Yutu continued moving months after the storm itself. I know this is difficult to hear, especially for families still dealing with damage, financial stress, and uncertainty. But I believe our community deserves honesty about how these systems work while we continue pushing to make sure the CNMI remains part of these federal funding discussions every step of the way.
