I had the opportunity to sit down with Commander Paul Tortora of the Military Sealift Command, Ship Support Unit Guam. Military Sealift Command plays a critical role in our nation’s defense by delivering logistics, strategic sealift, and specialized services around the clock. For many in the CNMI, MSC is most visible through the prepositioning ships that sit on our western horizon and have become part of our daily view. Our meeting followed a letter I sent to MSC leadership about opportunities for the CNMI to take on a greater role in the servicing and maintenance of these vessels. Beyond receiving a response to my letter, I appreciated the chance to have an in depth discussion with Commander Tortora about MSC’s mission, how the fleet is supported, and the ways the CNMI could meaningfully contribute as the service and its needs continue to evolve.
