Taking the Field for a Great Cause

I traded the halls of Congress for the softball field last week to join my colleagues for the annual Congressional Women’s Softball Game at Audi Field. Every year, Democratic and Republican women in Congress come together as Team Congress to take on the women of the Capitol press corps, appropriately named the Bad News Babes, to raise money for the Young Survival Coalition and its work supporting young adults affected by breast cancer. Unfortunately, I have to report that the journalists got us this year, 22-16. But I did manage to send one all the way to the outfield fence that, for a brief and glorious moment, looked like a grand slam before being ruled a ground-rule double. I’ll take it! More importantly, this year’s game raised more than $880,000, bringing the total raised since the tradition began in 2009 to more than $5.8 million. It was a great night, a great cause, and a lot of fun playing alongside women from both sides of the aisle. Opportunities like this also give us a chance to build relationships with colleagues across party lines that carry over into the work we do together in Congress. Congratulations to the Bad News Babes on the win. We’ll get you next year!
