Strengthening Our Partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard

On Wednesday I met with Rear Admiral Sean P. Regan, Commander, U.S. Coast Guard Oceania, to receive updates on Coast Guard operations in the Northern Marianas and across the Pacific. We had a candid discussion about the challenges facing the Coast Guard in this vast and strategic region, including illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, drug trafficking, and foreign incursions, and the opportunities we have to strengthen maritime security. I reiterated my strong support for the Coast Guard and my amendment to the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2025, which calls for a feasibility study on expanding Coast Guard presence and operations in the CNMI. A stronger Coast Guard presence not only enhances our security, it also supports economic priorities, like protecting the CNMI’s tourism industry. It was especially meaningful to have Tinian native Lieutenant Freddy Hofschneider (left) join the meeting along with other Coast Guard officials and staff. I thank the Coast Guard for their continued partnership, and I remain committed to ensuring the Northern Marianas are supported and protected.
