Protecting Kids with the CAR SEAT Act
I’m proud to be an original cosponsor, alongside Congresswoman Laura Gillen (D-New York) and Congressman Ryan Mackenzie (R-Pennsylvania), of H.R. 7679, the Child Automobile Restraint Safety Education and Training (CAR SEAT) Act. The CAR SEAT Act directs the U.S. Department of Transportation to launch a national education campaign on the dangers of counterfeit and noncompliant child car seats and booster seats. The bill also allows states and territories to use federal highway safety funds to help educate families about how to identify safe, federally compliant products. For families in the CNMI where many essential items are purchased online or imported, having reliable information about safe car seats is especially important. I’m also proud that this effort has earned the support of multiple national consumer and safety organizations working to protect children on the road, and has received national media attention, helping bring greater awareness to the risks posed by counterfeit car seats and the importance of making sure every child is properly protected.
