President Trump announced over the weekend that he will direct his administration to declassify and release all records related to Amelia Earhart’s 1937 disappearance. In July, I sent the President a letter requesting the declassification of any federal records that could shed light on Earhart’s final flight. In my letter, I emphasized that Earhart’s story carries particular weight in the Marianas. Many of our elders have shared credible, firsthand accounts of seeing her on Saipan, memories that have been passed down through generations. The release of these records would not only honor one of America’s most iconic aviators but also bring historical clarity to a story deeply connected to our islands. I thank President Trump for his decision and his willingness to honor this request. His action gives hope that we may finally uncover answers to one of history’s great mysteries, while potentially recognizing the Marianas’ place in this important story.
