I had the great opportunity to talk all things energy with Scott Hase from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Thelma Inos from the DPW Division of Energy. In collaboration with the Office of Insular Affairs, NREL is providing vital technical support to reorganize our power grid, modernize outdated infrastructure, and improve energy efficiency in partnership with CUC. Their work includes exploring advanced grid-forming inverters and expanding solar integration with battery storage, all things essential to reducing fuel dependence and stabilizing electricity for our residents. As we’ve seen during recent power fluctuations across the Marianas, reliable energy is crucial to keeping the lights on, lowering costs, and protecting families and businesses from unexpected outages. I am grateful for the conversation because I am looking for any and all options to see federal resources be put to strengthening our grid, promoting renewable energy, and ensuring long-term energy security for the Marianas.
