Pause on Federal Financial Assistance Programs Rescinded
In his first week, President Trump signed over two dozen Executive Orders, prompting federal agencies to adjust operations. One directive from the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) halted federal grants, loans, and financial assistance while programs were reviewed—raising concerns for the CNMI. This halt potentially included critical federal programs that support our community. I responded immediately, seeking clarity from OMB on the extent of the impact in the CNMI and providing updates as we gathered information. By Wednesday, a federal judge temporarily blocked the pause, and by Thursday, OMB rescinded its guidance. While this reversal is a relief, it highlights the urgency of reducing our reliance on federal assistance and building a stronger, more resilient economy. If you operate a federally funded program and have received notice of an impact from your grantor I want to know. Please reach out to your Congressional Office at (670) 323-2647/8 so we can seek out ways to help.
