In recent months, the hard-working men and women of the CNMI Customs and Biosecurity have intercepted multiple incursions—from invasive snails on a vessel from Turkey to invasive moths arriving from Korea. Just last week, Little Fire Ants were discovered in cargo for a military contractor. Thanks to swift action, the shipment was returned to Guam and DOD Biosecurity was notified. This week, I was able to recap on the actions of the CNMI to safeguard our borders and the growing threats of invasive species during my meeting Col. James DLG. These incidents highlight the urgency of prevention: Guam already faces 60 invasive species not present here. I support strengthening biosecurity operations and facilities, as well as deepening collaboration with DOD, to prevent new introductions, safeguard our environment, and protect our food security.
