The Marianas, Japan, and Korea: Our Enduring Ties
We recently came across this thoughtful feature in The Herald Business, a publication of The Korea Herald, highlighting the Northern Marianas as a place where history, culture, and people from across the Pacific come together. From Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, our islands share deep and lasting connections with Japan and Korea that continue to shape our communities today. The article captures both the resilience and history of our islands. Super Typhoons Sinlaku and Bavi brought tremendous challenges, but across the Northern Marianas, our people continue to rebuild, care for one another, and move forward. Our shared history with Japan and Korea is visible throughout our islands. Historic sites and memorials remind us of the lives and sacrifices of World War II, while continuing to bring Japanese and Korean visitors to our islands. These connections remain a part of who we are today through tourism, cultural exchange, family ties, and friendship. We are proud that the Marianas can be a place of both remembrance and renewal, and I look forward to continuing to strengthen the friendships that connect the CNMI with Japan, Korea, and the wider Pacific.
