Independent Work and Gig Economy Hearing

On Tuesday the Small Business Committee held a hearing entitled, “Independent Work, Real Opportunity: The Gig Economy and the Future of Entrepreneurship”. We heard from witnesses about how the gig economy, which includes food and rideshare services but also independent sellers on platforms like Etsy, expands entrepreneurship and supports small business growth. I enquired about how gig economy apps can help reduce the administrative burden for new entrepreneurs and how they may be able to help mitigate the seasonality of tourism-dependent economies like our own.
