Federal-NMI Coordination on Physician Access

On Wednesday, I met with Dr. Ted Parker and Dr. Marty Rohringer of the CNMI Board of Professional Licensing to discuss CNMI Public Law 23-33, a recently enacted law that allows the Health Care Professions Licensing Board to establish regulations for licensing foreign-trained physicians. This legislation is a step toward addressing our shortage of qualified physicians by creating a pathway for non-U.S. citizen doctors to practice medicine in the CNMI. However, it also intersects with our islands’ unique position in the national immigration system, presenting both challenges and opportunities. I look forward to working together to ensure this initiative moves forward in a way that provides the people of the CNMI with access to the quality health care services they deserve.
