Facing the CNMI’s Fiscal Challenges Together
I returned to the Marianas on Monday, and the first item on the agenda was joining Governor Apatang, Lt. Governor Mendiola, and members of the CNMI Legislature to speak directly with you about the reality of the government’s finances. Transparency is essential in difficult times. It is not only about showing what decisions are made, but also explaining why they are made. That is why we came together for a press conference on the severe revenue shortfalls facing the government. The people deserve the truth, and I thank Governor Apatang for his commitment to share it openly. I was glad to join him in talking about the expectations from the federal government and the support that may be available. There are opportunities before us, and I believe we can demonstrate that the CNMI is serious about its responsibilities while working together to rebuild into something greater.
