Deep Sea Mining Public Comment Period Open
The U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has published a Request for Information and Interest regarding potential leasing opportunities for seabed critical mineral extraction on the Pacific Outer Continental Shelf offshore the CNMI. This notice, which initiates a 30-day public comment period, is the first step of potential mineral extraction in the area. No determination on whether any such leasing will occur has been made. This is an important opportunity for the people of the Marianas to be heard. BOEM is seeking input from CNMI businesses, community members, and stakeholders on potential economic opportunities, geologic conditions, cultural and environmental considerations, and current uses of the area such as fishing and navigation. Your comments now will help ensure that any future decisions reflect the realities of our islands and balance economic development, environmental protection, and long-term supply chain needs.
To leave a comment, go to http://www.regulations.gov/, enter BOEM-2025-0351 in the search box at the top of the page and click “search”, and then press “comment”. Additional information can be found at https://www.boem.gov/marine-minerals/commonwealth-northern-mariana-islands-cnmi-activities. I look forward to hearing the community’s thoughts.
