A Conversation on Amelia Earhart and Island Memory

Our memories matter, and the stories of our elders are key to understanding who we are and where we come from. This week, I had the pleasure of meeting with Marie Castro and members of the Amelia Earhart Monument Organization, who have dedicated so much of their time to documenting and sharing the memories our community have about Amelia Earhart in the Marianas. Ms. Castro’s life of work sharing these stories is a powerful reminder that the lived experiences of our people don’t just shape local history—they can have national and even global significance. Listening to her stories and the journey she’s taken in exploring the mystery of Earhart’s disappearance was fascinating. I admire her persistence and conviction that our community’s memories are worth telling and preserving. Thank you to the organization for your time to share these stories with me and special thank you to Ms. Castro for the conversation and for providing me a copy of your book—it is something I will truly cherish.
