Connecting Military Investments with Community Needs
We started off the week with a visit from a Congressional Staff Delegation led by staff from Speaker Mike Johnson’s office. The delegation, representing members of the House Armed Services Committee, came to Saipan and Tinian for a two-day site visit to see firsthand some of the important developments and challenges facing our islands. During their visit, I had the opportunity to join them in seeing the progress being made on Tinian’s Divert Airfield and the North Field runway project. We also visited the Tinian power plant to see the significant damage caused by Super Typhoon Sinlaku and the challenges facing our island’s critical infrastructure. The visit was an important opportunity to talk about how Congress can better integrate Department of War projects with the civilian infrastructure that supports our communities across the CNMI. As the military expands its presence in the Marianas, we have to recognize that a strong, resilient local economy and reliable public infrastructure are essential to supporting that mission. I am grateful that this team made the trip to our islands and appreciate the Speaker’s Office taking a real interest in the conditions here at home. These are exactly the kinds of conversations we need to make sure that federal investments in our region also recognize and address the needs of the communities that support them.
