Bagging groceries, listening, learning

This week, I stepped behind the counter as a “celebrity bagger” at Joeten Susupe—a fun moment, but also a meaningful one. I wanted to see firsthand what a busy evening looks like, how the staff moves, and how one of our most iconic businesses is managing during tough times. Fun fact: I used to be a checker at Safeway, so I know what a packed store feels like. What I saw reminded me just how much our local businesses are still feeling the pressure. But more than anything, this visit was about connection. I laughed with shoppers, listened to residents, and spent time with the Joeten team. That’s what this work is about—staying grounded in the real, everyday experiences of our people. Thank you to Joeten for having me—and to everyone who stopped by.
