The week started with a visit to Mount Carmel School to speak with the students in Thomas Manglona’s journalism class. Journalism is about writing, but it also requires thinking critically about the issues facing a community, understanding their context, and asking the questions that bring greater transparency to the public. One of the things I particularly enjoy about working with the CNMI’s media is the opportunity to receive questions and share my thoughts on the issues we are facing in Congress and here at home. These students asked thoughtful and insightful questions, and it was a real joy to spend some time sharing what I know and supporting their interest in journalism. I think we may have a few future journalists in that classroom, and that is great news. The future Commonwealth will need smart, dedicated journalists who keep our people informed and hold elected officials accountable. Thank you to MCS, Thomas, and the students for the invitation and the great conversation.
