Honoring Peace on Tinian

I had the great honor of delivering remarks at the 2026 Tinian Peace Ceremony commemorating the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6th. The ceremony is a powerful reminder of Tinian's unique place in world history and of our responsibility to remember both the events that took place here and the lives forever changed by them. In my remarks, I reflected on growing up on Tinian, where history was never something found only in books, but something that lived beneath our feet and shaped the conversations we had as children. I also spoke about the people of Tinian who rebuilt their island after the war and demonstrated that even after unimaginable conflict, communities can choose reconciliation, friendship, and peace. It was a privilege to join veterans, our friends from Japan, and our local community in honoring the past while reaffirming our shared hope for a more peaceful future.
