Eighty years ago, Tinian launched the mission that brought World War II to an end. The peace that followed came at an enormous cost, with the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki caused by planes that departed from our shores. On Wednesday, I joined the commemoration on Tinian to mark this moment in history. It was a day filled with mixed emotions - gratitude for peace, and deep reflection on the destruction that brought it about. Hearing from speakers and standing alongside guests from around the world was a reminder of both the weight of that history and the shared responsibility we carry today. Peace is not guaranteed. It must be remembered, valued, and protected.
