The U.S. Department of Commerce announced Friday the appointment of Cody Norita to the Northern Mariana Islands seat on the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council. Nominated by Governor Apatang, Norita is a U.S. Navy veteran and currently serves as Assistant Fire Chief for the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services in Saipan. He is also an experienced pelagic fisherman and founder of the CNMI Veterans Fishing Derby. Norita will serve a three-year term from August 11, 2026, through August 10, 2029. In his new role, he will represent the CNMI on the Council, which provides recommendations on fisheries management and conservation policies throughout the Western Pacific region. Council members play a critical role in carrying out the Magnuson-Stevens Act's mandate to end overfishing, rebuild fish stocks, support sustainable fisheries, and maintain vibrant coastal communities. Congratulations to Cody on his appointment, and best wishes to him as he begins his term on the Council.
